I Get Wound Up

I Get Wound Up
I was born in the nick of time.
Rolled me on my side.
I get wound up, I get wound up.
Loosen me up, loosen me up.
Who came first? The chick or the hen?
Will we ever be wild again?
I get wound up, I get wound up.
Loosen me up, loosen me up.
Hold me like a child, hold me like a child again.
Spoon feed me your best cookin’,
something that you made from scratch.
Just hold me like a child, hold me like a child again.
I sideways glance, a misplaced word -
he’s saying something I never heard.
I get wound up, I get wound up.
Loosen me up, loosen me up.
A babe in the basket on the steps at dawn.
Whole life spent wondering what went wrong.
I get wound up.
Loosen me up, loosen me up, loosen me up, loosen me up.
Hold me like a child, hold me like a child again.
Spoon feed me your best cookin’,
something that you made from scratch.
Just hold me like a child, hold me like a child again.
Just hold me like a child, hold me like a child again.

Lorelei

Lorelei
Lorelei,
Lorelei,
Lorelei.
She’s standing at the top of the stairs.
No ones’ listening and nobody cares.
Lorelei,
Lorelei,
Lorelei.
He’s knocking at her front door.
But her heart doesn’t live here anymore.
Lorelei,
Lorelei,
Lorelei.
Frozen grass, warm winter sun.
The hard times have only just begun.
Lorelei,
Lorelei,
Lorelei.
They knew she had to go.
Where she’ll end up, nobody knows.

Middle of Nowhere

Middle of Nowhere
My favorite picture on the wall -
a girl, a log cabin, and a coupla’ dogs.
Beyond her is a big red barn
she’s got a shovel and a pitch fork
swung over each arm
looks like another dusty day
of work on the farm.
There’s an old dirt road that will take you there
if you don’t have a worry, if you ain’t got a care.
And I would be happy there
out in the middle of nowhere…
with my old beat up Ford,
my green broke horse,
I’m sitting on the front porch.
Sitting on the front porch
with the dogs layin’ at my feet…
we’ve got a lot of mountain
and a little creek out there.
Out in the middle of nowhere.
Loretta Lynn and Hank Williams
are singing to me through the window.
I’ve got a bread in the oven
and a stew over the stove.
Tonight I’ll braid down my long brown hair
and pack up the saddle bag on the mare -
I’ve got a fence to fix.
See me riding over that ridge?
I would be happy there
out in the middle of nowhere…
with my old beat up Ford,
my green broke horse,
I’m sitting on the front porch.
Sitting on the front porch
with the dogs layin’ at my feet…
we’ve got a lot of mountain
and a little creek out there.
Out in the middle of nowhere.
I would be happy there
out in the middle of nowhere…
with my old beat up Ford,
my green broke horse,
I’m sitting on the front porch.
Sitting on the front porch
with the dogs layin’ at my feet…
we’ve got a lot of mountain
and a little creek out there.
Out in the middle of nowhere.

The River

The River
Meet me at the river.
Overturn each mossy stone.
Meet me at the river.
Tell me something I don’t know.
Shed your rough snake skin.
Throw caution to the wind.
Shed your rough snake skin.
Breathe my love like oxygen.
Explore each dark cave
where I hide when I’m afraid.
Love me more tomorrow
than you did yesterday.
Bathe me in the river.
Wash off all of these sins.
Bathe me in the river.
So we may begin again.
Explore each dark cave
where I hide when I’m afraid.
Love me more tomorrow
than you did yesterday.

Blown Away

Blown Away
My car won’t start, but my heart is beating hard.
I’m walking down the dark alley to your door.
And he met me in silence with a white rag to stop the bleeding.
My face was flushed and my forehead was warm.
When our eyes met and our pulse raced, what did we know?
To guess how many lives we’d lived together -
were we cut from the same stone?
Oh the mind can play tricks on lonely hearts,
when you find you feel better together than when you’re apart.
And I know you couldn’t save me -
I know no one can.
I’m standing in the eye of the storm just looking for an escape plan.
My voice is the howling wind,
my eyes cry like rain,
my house has been blown down…
will I ever be the same?
Why do I hold on when nothing stays?
Subtle as sand changing shape underneath a relentless wave.
Oh love is so tender, love can be so strong,
love can feel so right even when we know it’s wrong.
And I know you couldn’t save me -
I know no one can.
I’m standing in the eye of the storm just looking for an escape plan.
My voice is the howling wind,
my eyes cry like rain,
my house has been blown down…
will I ever be the same?
Oh my house has been blown down.
I’ll never be the same.

The Drifter
Walk down that road, don’t know where it’s leadin’
looking for a painted arrow on the ground.
Your back is sturdy and your shoes are new,
looking for somewhere where no one knows you.
Step into a new town - you’re just one more unfamiliar face
and people walking by bump your shoulders.
Not a memory to hold dear - no one knows your story here,
you’re just another stranger passing by.
And it’s a sweet, bittersweet journey
when you don’t know exactly where to go.
But somewhere out there, theres’ a shadow
of a place that will welcome you home.
Welcome you home.
It can’t get lonesome if no one can really see you
and find something about you they don’t like.
But what about on one of those dreary, cold and quiet nights
when you lay and dream of someone by your side?
Well it’s a sweet, bittersweet journey
when you don’t know exactly where to go.
But somewhere out there, theres’ a shadow
of a place that will welcome you home.
Yes, somewhere out there, there’s a shadow
of a place that will welcome you home.
Welcome you home.

Focus
I’ve been staring at this rickety old cedar fence -
this rickety old cedar fence, for more than an hour now.
The sun is setting now - for more than an hour now…
the sky is pink with a rush of purple and orange.
I can’t see the end of that broken down post,
drifting over that rollin’ hill.
But the grass has been the deepest shade of indigo
for more than an hour now.
Well I’ve been starin’ at this old decrepit barn -
this old decrepit barn, for more than an hour now.
And it’s beginning to blend in with the blackish silhouette
of the raggedy-ann topped Hemlocks,
those raggedy-ann tops.
And soon it will be too dark for me to see a single thing,
but I can bet on those stars coming out.
And they’ll begin to shine...in just about an hour’s time.
I can’t see the end of that broken down post,
drifting over that rollin’ hill.
But the grass has been the deepest shade of indigo
for more than an hour now.
I’ve been starin’...
I’ve been starin’...
Oh, I’ve been…
starin’ at that old…
cedar fence
That cedar fence.

Forbidden Love
Being ‘round you makes my heart swell.
Makes me weak in the knees.
Like I’ve been struck by a bolt lightning.
Like I could soar above this small town.
What if we did? What if we let this whole thing go?
Where would we begin?
Picking up the pieces of the moments we shared,
would they stop and stare?
And they’d start throwing glass!
‘Cus everybody likes to break things when they get mad.
Ooooooooo
why are we so afraid to love?
I’ll never understand. I’ll never understand.
Winters’ coming, let’s hibernate.
Come with me, baby, we’ll hide away!
And we won’t have to show ourselves again until Spring.
Maybe by then the scene will have changed.
‘Cus like a wildfire they’re spreading lies!
‘Cus you know everybody likes to talk about other peoples’ lives.
Ooooooo
You got something to say, just say it to my face.
Can you say it to my face?
Oooooo
Oooooo
Oooooo
Oooooo

"Up the River", written by Laura Veirs
Billy was a young man gone astray
Bottle at his lips all night
And day mama said they're gonna
Send you up the river someday
Whiskey ate big holes in Billy's head
Summer's day he shot spud Murphy dead
He said I'm headed up the river
As he watched the blood pour red
Mama asked Lord Jesus what to do
At the door came knocking boys in blue
We're gonna send him up the river
And make him pay his dues ma'am
And so she watched him round that river bend
Go billy felt a chill pass 'cross him
Cold they sent him up the river
To turn a young man old

The Other Side

The Other Side
One last turn to look back at the sun
a moment drags on forever before it’s gone
and lately I’ve been wondering what it’s like to pass on
time is moving faster now, life is shorter than it’s long.
A dark shadows’ been followin’ me around
quicksand masquerading as solid ground
and I can’t go to bed, it’ll happen again tomorrow.
And overnight my children have grown up too,
and the idea of me and you
is nothing but a daydream from a former life.
My body hurts more now when I fall
and in my heart there’s an eternal lonely coyote call
I’m just a’wanderin’, passing the time
this life is just a stepping stone to the other side.
The other side.
They say I’ll feel painless and whole
when I set down the weight of all this sorrow
on the other side.
The other side.
If what they say is true
I will spend an eternity with you
on the other side.
My body hurts more now when I fall
and in my heart there’s an eternal lonely coyote call
I’m just a’wanderin’, passing the time
this life is just a stepping stone to the other side.
The other side.
Mama don’t cry for me
‘cus I’m finally free, oh I’m finally free…
I’m finally free.

Follow Her Down

Follow Her Down
She was wise
she was a sweet-hearted woman
she didn’t take any shit
she ran with the wolves
keeping time with the shooting stars
she’ll stare at you long and hard
make you question who you are
why do you feel good?
why do you feel bad?
How do you feel and why do you feel it all?
Follow that woman, follow that woman, follow that woman, follow that woman,
follow her down.
You gotta follow that woman, follow that woman, follow that woman, follow that woman,
follow her down.
She was small
but she was mighty strong
deep in her core
keepin’ soft inside along the edges
she’ll teach you how not to harden.
Harden and you’re doomed
harden and you’re dead,
harden and you’re doomed
harden and you’re dead,
harden and you’re doomed
harden and you’re dead…
you’ve got to rise above it!
Follow that woman, follow that woman, follow that woman, follow that woman,
follow her down.
You gotta follow that woman, follow that woman, follow that woman, follow that woman,
follow her down…
Feel the weight.
You’ve got to feel the weight.
Well she buried her heart deep within the ground.
For the world is big, for the world is round.
Yes she buried her heart deep within the ground,
for the world is big, for the world is round.
Follow her down.
Follow her down.
Follow her down.
Follow her down.
